SEND at Highfield
Welcome to the Special Needs section. In this section, there is information about the Special Needs provision available at Highfield Primary School. At Highfield, the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) is Mrs Hackett. As a result of discussions between staff and the special needs coordinator, classroom teachers carefully plan and differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of special needs children. The SENCO liaises closely with teachers and support staff to ensure that the children’s needs are being met within the classroom.
Definition
The Education Act 1996 says that a child has special educational needs (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.
A learning difficulty means that the child either:
- Has significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age
- Has a disability, which either prevents or hinders the child from making use of the educational facilities which are provided for children of the same age in a mainstream school
Special educational provision means educational provision, which is additional to, or different from, the provision made generally for children of the same age in a mainstream school. At Highfield Primary School we are committed to meeting the special educational needs of pupils and ensuring that they make progress.
