Welcome to Year 3
Welcome to Year 3! Mr Bear is the class teacher and has worked at Highfield for 17 years across Years 1 to 5. Miss Morey is a student teacher and teaching assistant who has been at Highfield for 4 years, and Mrs Draper is our teaching assistant and has worked here for 12 years..
We focus on making learning fun so that all children are happy at school every day. We follow our school rules: Ready, Respectful, and Safe. Children earn Dojo points for good behavior, effort, and kindness.
Our Year 3 curriculum looks like this:
Curriculum Topics & Trips
Autumn Term: Stones and Bones (Stone Age)
- History & Art: Exploring the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods, the transition from hunter-gatherers to settled farmers, and prehistoric art forms including cave paintings, printing, and the Lion Man sculpture.
- Geography & DT: Studying physical and human features of the Lake District alongside the impact of tourism, while learning textile sewing techniques in DT.
- Topic Trip: A trip to Tatton Park to support Stone Age learning.
- Spring Term: All Roads Lead to Rome (Romans)
- History & Art: Investigating Celtic life, the Roman invasion of Britain, legionary soldiers, and creating mosaic artwork using individual tesserae tiles.
- Geography & DT: Learning about the four layers of the Earth, volcanoes, and the Pacific Ring of Fire, alongside designing and constructing Roman chariots.
- Topic Trip: A dedicated Roman day at the Chester Roman DEVA Museum.
- Summer Term: The Inca Trail (The Incas)
- History & Art: Learning about the expansion of the Inca Empire in South America, conquistadors, and analyzing Henri Rousseau’s artwork The Tiger in the Storm.
- Geography & DT: Exploring South American rainforest ecosystems, climate zones, and deforestation, paired with DT cooking lessons to prepare traditional empanadas.
- Topic Trip: A trip to Blackpool Zoo to learn about South America, rainforest habitats, and animals linked to the Incas.
Physical Education (PE)
Children participate in two hours of PE per week across two designated days. PE kit is required in school on both PE days.
Homework Expectations
- Reading: Read books at least 5 times a week.
- Spellings: Practice weekly spellings for a test every Friday.
- Times Tables: Practice multiplication recall on TT Rockstars as often as possible.
School Snacks
Children can bring their own healthy snack in from home for morning break time, or school snacks are available to purchase from the school office.
